My Top 3 Tips For Buying Furniture

May 11, 2022

Three Spaces Designed with Mor Furniture

I teamed up with Mor Furniture to create three spaces in studio to show you how to create rooms that function well for your lifestyle. The furniture buying process is expensive and can be overwhelming, so here are my three tips to get it right and purchase pieces you will love for years to come.

Tip #1: Define Your Idea of Comfort

You will use what you enjoy! Many of my clients have children or love to entertain. Maximizing seating, and comfortable seating at that, is important to them. In that case, a sectional is my go-to choice to keep everyone together and in the center of the action. Whether it’s chatting, game time or movie night, a deep seat sectional will be the place to gather. The Hansel Sectional at Mor fit that bill with its depth, durable fabric and clean lines. Comfort is cozy!

This sectional is more than enough to keep everyone comfortable, but as you know…I love a swivel chair. Swivel chairs function beautifully in shared or open concept spaces. No one is left out of a conversation in the room when turning around is so easy. It isn’t easy to find swivel chairs that look as good as they feel, and I love these Flax Swivel Chairs in Linen. By adding two of these to the seating group, the comfort level absolutely doubled! For Tip #1…the sectional and chairs are the definition of comfort!

Tip #2: Find Form & Function

This is key in any home, but I’m looking at my smaller space friends with this one. If you feel short on space, anything you invest in will have to look good AND work well. More than ever, we are working and studying from home and not everyone is fortunate to have a dedicated office space. Find yourself with a sofa full of laptops, cords and papers? Work smarter not harder with the Stone Sofa Bar Table and included barstools.

Look closely and see that form and function. Not only does this console look good, it has integrated power and USB ports which will keep your sofa, dining table and coffee table free of all that cord clutter. When not working, this makes for a stylish console or small space sofa back dining spot. When you’re spending money on furniture, make it work for you! Take a peek at those ports…Tip #2 approved!

Tip #3: Select Furniture That Can Be Used In Multiple Rooms

What if my style changes in the future? What if we move? If you’ve ever asked yourself these questions before spending money on a larger piece of furniture, the solution is to buy pieces that can be shuffled and re-homed within your home. When styling an office space, I pulled in a piece that may surprise you. I knew I wanted to use the Hamilton Media Console in this space the moment I saw it.

Yes, it’s a media console but it’s also a fantastic credenza for the office. With glass doors to show off your books or collectibles, drawers to hide all the must have office supplies and an open shelf on the bottom, this piece will work as hard as you do. The top could be simply styled as I have shown here or it could be the perfect spot for a printer.

We’ve got a media console and an office credenza, but I have one more idea. This would make a fabulous buffet with plenty of room for dish and linen storage. You will feel far better about your purchase if you know you can use it in many ways for many years to come.
